Wood Oaks Green Park was invaded by 274 brave bicycle riders Nov. 9, who strained their muscles and lungs for 30- to 60-minutes at a time to race up and down hills and over grass, mud, gravel and, occasionally, pavement. The cyclocross races raised about $4,000 for bike safety and education, according to Chris Henning, one of the organizers.

Glenbrook South High School students and faculty raised more than $105,000 during a 24-hour telethon at the school to help Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook fund its new $6.5 million building. The telethon on local cable access channels 26 and 17 in Glenview exceeded the $100,000 goal, money which gave the social service agency a strong start toward the final $1 million it needs to complete the facility it wants to build.
